The royal flush is the best hand available in poker. It features five consecutive cards, all of the same suit, in order to create a run from the card of 10 through to ace. For example, 10♠-J♠-Q♠-K♠-A♠

The chance of winning with one royal flush where you have seven cards to pick up is approximately 1 in 124,000 – just so you know it.

In a second rank, higher than four of a kind,  also very rare to encounter, a straight flush consists of any five cards that are all the same suit, such as 5-6-7-8-9.

If another player has a higher straight flush than you have, in the same deal, as always the higher straight flush beats the lower. For instance, 7♣-8♣-9♣-10♣-J♣ beats 5-6-7-8-9

Poker Hands Rankings #3. Four Of A Kind

Four-of-a-kind, or a quad, is the third-best hand in poker. It ranks after the very best hand of a royal flush and the second-best hand of a straight flush. An example is  7♠-7♠-7♠-7♠-A, which is a set of four cards of equal value along with another card known as a side card.

How rare is 4 of a kind in poker? The odds of getting quads in a poker hand are 4,164-to-1. The probability of making 4-of-a-kind is 0.0256%.

Poker Hands Rankings #4. Full house

A full house is a combination of three of a kind and a pair in the same suit. It is a strong hand, but it is not as high-ranking as four of a kind. For instance, 7-7-7♣-A-A♠

In a battle of two or more full houses, the hand with the higher-ranking three-of-a-kind wins, like 9♠-9♣-9♥-K-K betas 7-7-7♣-A-A♠.  It is said that you have a, 0.1441% chance of making a full house. This can also be expressed as 693.17-to-1 odds against.

Poker Hands Rankings #5. Flush

A hand of five cards of the same suit, but not in a sequence is called a flush. It is not as strong as a full house, but it is still a good hand.

Again, four suits share the same rank. If two players both have a flush, the one with the highest card wins. The flush A♣-8♣-6♣-5♣-2♣ thus beats the flush K♠-Q♠-J♠-10♠-5♠, regardless of suit. If the highest cards are equal in rank, the second-highest cards are compared, and so on.

Poker Hands Rankings #6. Straight

A straight has 5 cards of consecutive value that are not all the same suit.

In the battle of two straights, as always the lower loses. The Queen-high straight like Q♣-10-9-8♣-7♣ loses against King-high strait K-Q-J-10♣-9♠. In a straight, the Ace may count as the lowest card if it is in the case of A-2♠-3♣-4♠-5♣ (called a wheel), while the highest possible straight is 10♠-J♠-Q-K-A (called a Broadway).

Poker Hands Rankings #7. Three Of A Kind

Also known as ‘trips’, three of a kind is a set of 3 cards of the same value and 2 side cards of different face values, which is quite different from a full house. An example is J♣-J♠-J-2-7♠. If two players both have trips, the higher one wins, nothing more to be considered.

Poker Hands Rankings #8. Two Pair

Two pairs in the poker hands ranking are still not the lowest one. It is common to see two pairs, such as 8♠-8♣-J-JA♠.

In the battle of two players having a two-pair each, the higher pair wins; the hand 8♠-8♣-J-J-A♠ thus loses against K♣-KJ♣-J♠-10♠. If the high pairs are the same, the higher of the lower pairs wins. In case both pairs are the same for the two players, either even or the higher high card wins. Thus, for example, the hand 8♠-8♣-J-J-A♠ beats or equal to 8-8-J♠-J♣-K♠.

Poker Hands Rankings #9. A Pair

A pair consists of two cards that have the same face value and other high cards, such as 6♣-6-7-9-J♦.  When two players have both pairs at the same value, the winner is decided by the high card.  For example, the hand K-K♣-Q-8♠-3♣ beats K♠-K-Q♣-7-6♣.

Poker Hands Rankings #10. High Card

At the bottom of poker hands rankings is the high card. It means all find cards unmatch each other to form any pair, run, or set. Simply, a higher high card wins.

And what happens in case two players do have exactly equally high hands at the end, for instance, 9♠-9♣-A-A-K♠ vs 9-9-A♣-A♠-K? This is a rare case, actually. The simplest way is equally to distribute the pot to winners. If the pot cannot be split equally, the extra chip goes to the player closest clockwise after the dealer button.
